The Cathedral School
offers an after school homework center on Monday through Thursday, from 3:15 to
4:00.A teacher oversees the students
and provides help as needed.Students
may attend as many times per week as they wish.
Extra Help in Greek:
The Greek teachers run
the homework center on Wednesdays and are available to offer assistance to
students needing support in Greek.The
teachers run a separate Greek homework center on Mondays for those who need
additional tutoring.The Greek teachers are
also available in the mornings from 8:30 to 9:00 for parents needing
clarification about Greek homework.
After School Art:
After-school art is a
weekly program that provides students with an additional chance to develop
their artistic skills in a fun, stimulating setting.On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students (grades 4
– 8) work on advanced projects using materials such as charcoal, acrylic paint,
scratchboard and clay.Examples include
“Degas Paintings,” “Still-Life Drawings in Chalk” and “Scratchboard Animals.”
On Wednesdays, younger students (grades K – 3) explore visual creativity and
hone motor skills through drawing, painting and sculpture projects.Examples include “Mondrian Collages,”
“Starfish Sculptures” and “Faces in a Crowd Drawings.”
After School Open Gym:
On Mondays and
Wednesdays, there is an open gym for students from grades 3 through 8 from 3:15
to 4:00.Children participate in a
variety of sports and games, including basketball, soccer, floor hockey and
kickball.The students play games and do
drills in these sports as well as races and sprints to build stamina and
endurance.They also do pushups, sit-ups,
and other calisthenics to build strength and agility.The sports program reinforces a sense of fair
play and sportsmanship.
Basketball Team:
In the fall season there
is a boys’ basketball team for grades 5 through 8.This team competes with other Greek Orthodox
schools in the five boroughs.
After School Karate:
Loupakis Martial Arts
runs a karate program on Tuesdays and Thursdays.Students of all ages learn not only karate
techniques but comprehensive body strengthening.Students are awarded belts (white to black)
as they move through skill levels.
Mad Science:
Mad Science® is a
leading science enrichment provider. On Mondays, they deliver unique, hands-on
science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are
educational. Mad Science is proud to introduce millions of children to a world
of discovery while sparking their imagination. Mad Science encourages scientific
literacy in children in an age when science is as vital as reading, writing and
arithmetic.
Student Council
Events:
The student council is
the fund raising arm of the eighth grade.The student council sponsors many after school events such as dances,
movie afternoons, and weekend skating get togethers.
Eighth Grade Book Talk
Group:
The eighth grade has
initiated a reading group that meets on Monday afternoons.The students, who are interested, meet with
Ms. Fazzone to discuss books, plays, and poems that they would like to read or
to continue discussion of literature they have already read.It is meant to be an informal gathering where
everyone offers opinions and responses to literature and has fun.The group might also view movies or
documentaries that are related to the readings.The idea is to extend their reading and thinking to outside of the
classroom and to enable them to share their ideas and recommendations with
others in a social rather than academic setting.
Seventh Grade Test
Preparation Group:
Ms. Fazzone and Ms.
Rosenzweig hold a test preparation course for the seventh grade to help prepare
them for the standardized admission tests.The first series of classes is for the Specialized High School Test (SHSAT).Classes meet for English on Tuesdays and Math
on Thursdays for eight weeks starting in January.A following cycle of classes prepare students
for the Catholic and private school exams.Students may come on a week to week basis and participate in one or all
of the classes as they deem necessary.
